The best plug-in solar position is the one that combines useful sunlight with secure mounting, permission and a safe route to a suitable connection. Here is how the common options compare.

Start with sunlight, not the mounting surface
A secure south, south-east or south-west position is usually the strongest candidate. East and west can still work. Heavy shade or a north-facing position can outweigh the convenience of an otherwise simple installation.
Balconies need the most permission checks
Renters and leaseholders may need approval from a landlord, freeholder or building manager. The exact kit must permit balcony mounting, and panels must not obstruct escape routes or create a falling-object risk.
Garden systems trade height for access
Ground-level panels are easier to reach and may be repositioned, but they need stable anchoring, protection from children and pets, and a cable route that does not create a trip or weather-exposure hazard.
Roof positions are not automatically better
A roof or outbuilding can offer clearer sunlight, but safe access and an approved mounting method matter. Plug-in solar should not be treated as a shortcut around the installation requirements of conventional rooftop PV.
